The Washington-Nile Local School District invites nominations for candidates to the Portsmouth West High School Distinguished Alumni and Athletic Hall of Fame 2023.
This award honors alumni whose deeds and character exemplify outstanding achievement in their life’s work and/or service to their communities. There will be a district-wide hat day this Friday, February 10th. Please bring a $1 donation to wear a hat. Proceeds go to help the juniors and seniors toward their prom and graduation.

The PWHS Vocal Music Department will perform the Music of Queen on Friday and Saturday, February 10 and 11 at 7:30 pm on the high school stage.
Songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites the Dust, Who Wants to Live Forever and many more favorites will be presented through a combination of choreography, lights, singing and instrumental music that promises to ROCK YOU.

Congratulations to our recently selected Miss West, Kara Carter! Miss West was voted on by our student body after the candidates met the school-required criteria, interviews were conducted by PWHS Media, and then those interviews were distributed for students to assist with their selection. Miss West Kara Carter will represent Portsmouth West High School in the next several months in various River Days events and at the Portsmouth River Day Pageant September 2023.


Please note changes for softball tryouts: Tryouts will now be *February 20, 2023* at 3:30 in the athletic facility. Weightlifting and conditioning are three days a week at the facility from 3:15-5:15.

Grades 9, 10, & 11: PWHS will be administering the Accuplacer test for College Credit Plus eligibility on February 7th at 9:00am in the tiered room. If you are interested, come to the Guidance office to sign up.
Also, the mandatory meeting for students who are interested in College Credit plus for the 2023-2024 school year will be Wednesday February 8th at 6:00 in the tiered room. This is for parents and students. If you have any questions, see Mr. Conrad or Mrs. Emnett.

Current freshmen and sophomore girls:
The SHE program provides a 2-week virtual experience for young women who are currently in their freshman and sophomore years of high school. The program will include a series of virtual workshops, panels, and hands on research activities, with science research kits which will be sent directly to the participant’s home.
Week 1: Hands on Cancer Research––Live online laboratory instruction with at-home experiment kit
Week 2: Career Exploration in Cancer Research & Medicine––Virtual professional development workshop sessions
Dates & Time:
July 10 - 21, 2023; Monday thru Friday
Benefits
Financial compensation up to $500
Opportunity to connect with other high school students across the country
Attend presentations, panel discussions, and professional development workshops with research and medical professionals across the United States
Eligibility Criteria
Students who have completed their freshman or sophomore year of high school prior to the program start
Must identify as a female
Must be able to commit to 4 hours of virtual meetings Monday through Friday for two weeks in the summer (dates and times to be determined)
Expectations
Students must actively engage in all program activities
Student must commit to attending all 40 hours of program virtual sessions
Students will be asked to complete surveys to evaluate the program
