Dear Parents and Students, Portsmouth West Elementary School maintains the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) program to further support our Character Education program. We will continue to highlight and celebrate positive behavior through our reward systems. P.B.I.S. also supplies students with skills to handle potentially negative situations and think about the best course of action. Having a school-wide behavioral approach incorporates everyone. Students are able to see that we all support them and equally contribute to our school’s success and safety. The students and staff have constant reminders of the P.B.I.S. expectations placed at high visibility areas throughout the school. These expectations form a grid covering behavior associated for specific areas which include: classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, recess, and all other areas. Portsmouth West Elementary has adopted the acronym W.E.S.T. (Work Ethic, Engagement, Safety, Teamwork). When you exhibit a positive desired behavior, we will reward you with a raffle ticket, which we call a “Senator Buck”. Students earning Senator Bucks will be entered into a weekly drawing for rewards. Students will have the opportunity to show off their outstanding behavior and citizenship in all extra-curricular activities. We expect our students to exhibit Senator Pride in all situations, at school and in all community settings. During the month of September, we will kick off our PBIS program with a five-week booster activity. For each of these five weeks, we will review our behavioral expectations daily. Each week will focus on a different theme (letter of our W.E.S.T. acronym). We are going to ask our students to show school spirit and wear orange and black on Fridays to show their Senator spirit. Thank you for your continued support! Sincerely, Portsmouth West Elementary Staff Go Senators!!!

Goof Afternoon! For safety reasons, we have made a few changes regarding student pickups. K-2nd grade pickups will be dismissed at 3:20 to the Art Room door (#9). 3rd and 4th grade pickups will be dismissed at 3:20 to the Music Room door, (#10). No students will be dismissed from the front office between 3:00-3:20. Students dismissed before 3:00 pm will be considered as an early dismissal and marked absent from the time signed out. Thank you so much for helping to keep our students safe! #WeAreWest!

Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Portsmouth West Elementary! I am excited to be your principal, and I am looking forward to working with you and your students. It is going to be a great year! In order to address student safety concerns, parent pick-ups will be at the same doors (Music Room and Art Room), at 3:20. Parents will be required to park and walk to the doors to pick up their child. The fire lane will not be accessible. Please do not park on the grass. Let’s work together to keep all of our children safe. Just a few reminders for the upcoming year: Students will be counted as tardy after 8:55 a.m. Students leaving school (unexcused) before 3:00 p.m will be counted as an early dismissal. Students receiving 2 tardies and/or early dismissals in a nine week grading period will be assigned an after-school detention. These will be served from 3:45 to 4:45 on Wednesday or Thursday. #WeAreWest!

PWES does NOT have a latch-key program this year as my earlier post may have suggested. We will open the front doors at 7:30 for students to be dropped off as necessary due to parent work schedules. Unfortunately, we are unable to supervise a large number of students this early because the teaching staff does not report until 8:15. I hope this clears up the confusion. #WeAreWest!

The doors at PWES will not be open until 7:30 every morning for students to enter. At that time, supervision will be provided for your children, as well as homework help, time to work on assignments, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions.#WeAreWest!
