Parents

As students prepare to start the 2020-21 school year, I’m sure there are many questions and concerns about how we will continue at Portsmouth West Middle School.  I feel that we have a strong plan to keep children and staff safe. Although plans for restarting school change frequently, we will keep you up to date with the most recent information on our website.

As students arrive to school, they will report directly to their homeroom.  Those arriving on buses will have their temperature checked upon exiting the bus.  Students will have the option of picking up a grab-n-go breakfast which they can eat in the classroom prior to 8:00.

From 7:30-8:00, students will have their temperature checked in the classrooms by their first period teacher.  If they present with a fever, they will be placed in an isolation room and the parents will be contacted.

Students will be assigned a desk and chair that is theirs for the year.  They should sit only at the desk that is assigned to them.  Students will remain in the same classroom for instruction throughout the day.  Teachers will rotate from class to class to provide instruction.  Restroom breaks will be on an as needed individual basis.

Due to social distancing guidelines, class sizes have been reduced to 20 students or less.  Extra desks have been removed to allow for proper distancing measures.  If the Scioto County Health Advisory is Orange or Red, students will attend on an A or B schedule which will make class sizes much smaller.

In order to assure social distancing, students will eat lunch in the cafeteria, on the stage, and in the gymnasium.  There will be no a la carte items and students will not have to enter their pin number in line.  Larger tables will be marked to indicate safe distancing and students will be asked to sit in the same location each day.

Classes such as PE, Chorus, Advanced Art, Advanced Technology, Service Learning have not been included in the schedule this year.  All students will still receive Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  5th Grade will receive Art and Music.  6th Grade will receive Technology, Art and Music.  7th and 8th Grades will receive Health, Art, Music, some will receive Agriculture, some Engineering.  Some students 6-8 will receive band, even though they cannot play their instruments at this time.

Due to the tight constraints of this schedule and keeping all of the safety measures intact, schedule changes are discouraged.  Even though there are many changes to the schedule and location of classes, the classes are still being taught by the properly certified teachers.

At the end of the day, students will be dismissed in a manner that will prevent crowded hallways and contact with others.

What we need from parents:

  • Have conversations with your children about wearing a mask all day.
  • Explain to them the importance of Social Distancing and how to maintain it.
  • Remind them not to share personal items with others.
  • Provide a clear water bottle for your child as water fountains have been retrofitted to fill bottles.
  • Please understand that we cannot have many visitors, keep your trips to the office limited to the important items.  Call ahead if you need to meet with us.

We are excited to return to face to face instruction.  Our goal is to provide quality education and a positive experience for all of our students during this unprecedented and challenging time.

Thank you
